71 colleges have been approved for the upcoming academic year. These 71 colleges have the highest number of traditional 19 colleges of Arts, Science and Commerce.

The University of Mumbai will have to bear an extra burden from the upcoming academic year. There are already 780 colleges affiliated with Mumbai University, this number will increase now. Mumbai University will be recognizing 71 new colleges from the upcoming academic year 2019-20. These new colleges will get recognition according to the broad plan presented by the University. The University is already short with number of staff and professors but the number of colleges is increasing day by day. This will eventually increase more burdens on the University’s staff. The traditional colleges of Arts, Science & Commerce have been given approval.

According to the University law of the state government, approval for new colleges must be given according to the broad plan. Accordingly, the University of Mumbai has started preparing a comprehensive plan from last year. This year, the university presented a five-yearly broad plan. According to this plan, university finalizes the places where new colleges are required to start and approve them. Thus, 71 colleges have been approved for the upcoming academic year. These 71 colleges have the highest number of traditional 19 colleges of Arts, Science and Commerce. The University has recently announced a circular that includes 10 law colleges, 10 night colleges, 7 girls college, 8 skill development colleges and 4 special colleges as B.Ed Special.

State Government has only 25 thousand posts

Around 70 thousands posts of professors are vacant in colleges across the state. Considering the increasing number of students it is necessary to increase the number of professors too. However, only 25,000 posts of professors have been sanctioned since 1998. This number should be one and half a million. About 10,000 posts are still vacant out of these 25 thousand vacancies. University is needed to take this situation seriously as the ratio of students and teachers is very imbalanced and this may lead to educational mess in coming days. Many colleges are appointing staff on contract basis. Highly educated young people are working on salary of just Rs. 10 to 20 thousand only.
