Shocking: BMC posted blind worker at electric pump house

The worker living in a constant fear for his life, requested BMC for transfer. The Deputy Commissioner ordered the transfer post a request letter.

Anil Uttamrao Shelar, a 100 percent blind employee of Mumbai Municipal Corporation is living his life in a constant fear. He has been placed as a worker at the Electric Pump station at the water supply department which may turn dangerous for his life. Shelar, who is a B.A. graduate, has been appointed as a municipal clerk number 1750942. This appointment was done by the Bombay High Court order. He works as labor in the municipal water supply department of Assistant Engineer, Western Suburbs, North Borivali.

He has to work on handling water valves at the pumping house and starting the electrical pump to start water supply. But as Shelar is completely blind, and this work can jeopardize his life, so he is living under constant fear. Anil Uttamrao Shelar was appointed as a fourth-grader worker in the Municipal Corporation on 16th July, 2018 from BMC’s disability quota. He had filed an PIL in the Bombay High Court in regards to employment for blind people in Corporations. As a result of his judicial battle, 82 blind people got jobs in Corporation. The corporation has correctly appointed 81 people with him, but Anil Shelar has been given the task of starting water pump valve and electric water supply pump in the water supply department. He fears to get electric shock sometime while doing his work. Every day he travels from Badlapur to Borivali for this job.

Anil has written a request letter to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation authorities about his problem and requested to get justice. He has also submitted his complaint to Additional Commissioner of BMC for the same reason.

The application for Anil Shelar’s complaint was received on Monday. The BMC has taken notice of his disability and have ordered for his transfer at the appropriate place – Sudhir Naik, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (General Administration)
