Within next three months, the Mumbaikars may have a single smart card to meet all public transportation needs. Under the ‘One Nation One Card’ project, the Niti Aayog is currently studying the project in Mumbai. The Niti Aayog is considering implementing this project across the country once it is successfully implemented in Mumbai.
For Mumbai’s public transport, MMRDA is willing to do the integration of all types of transport services like water transport, road transport and railway services. The Chief Minister Fadanvis has said that integration of all public transport in Mumbai will be done with one Smart Card. This is an ambitious project of state government and it is expected to implement within three months in Mumbai.
The tender process for both the BEST and the Rail projects is currently in progress. The tender process for Bank service providers for smart card wallet is also under process. The government claims that this process will be completed in the next three months and then the project will be implemented in the Mumbai. These smart cards will be available for Central, Western and Harbor Rail and BEST Buses.
Metro and Mono Rail services will also be included in this smart card over time, informed MMRDA Additional Commissioner Sanjay Khandare. Once the tender process is completed, it is possible for passengers to use the smart card. MMRDA is a nodal agency for all transport activities in the ITC project. Smart card is also being considered for autos and taxis.
Smart card
There will be only one Smart Card for all public transports in Mumbai such as BEST, Railway, Metro and Mono. Banking partner will be selected for payment wallet and recharge from each service provider. It will be possible for passengers to use this smart card by refilling it. MMRDA has asked people for suggestions on smart card logos and designs.
