In 2010 in Maharashtra, more than 450 handicapped patients were treated with hip surgeries to stand on their feet but most of these people found a fault in the implants given by the Johnson Company for the hip surgery, patients also got infected. Some people also lost their lives due to this infection. The central government constituted a committee to look into the matter and further investigation of the victims. This committee includes officers from the Central and State Government. The committee will call the victim patients and examine them. According to the report of this investigation, the committee has assured that victim patients will get more than 20 lakh rupees as compensation.
In 2008, implants of Hip Replacement surgery were sent worldwide by a sister company of Johnson and Johnson. The company had sent 15,000 units of hip surgery implants worldwide. Of these, 4000 implants in India and 450 in Maharashtra are likely to use for surgery.
The matter came to light in 2010 after patient had infection post the surgery. Patients started getting swollen feet, legs turned black. Some people are said to have died too due to the infection. The patients complained to the doctor, police, FDA and also to the company for compensation. But the Company had tried to suppress this issue. Later FDA lodged a complaint in the police against the company. Now this case is in its final stage in the court and the victim patients will be compensated with more than 20 lakh refunds.
Committee formed for investigation
In this case, the company is also advertising in order to get the victim patients and their relatives to come forward. In addition, a committee has been constituted by the Central and State Government. There are 3 doctors, 2 orthopedic surgeons and radiologists in this committee. The company will also have State Drug Controller and Deputy Drug Controller as a representative of the Center government. The committee will start its work soon. The committee will verify all the relevant documents and what exactly went wrong with the patient. According the report will be sent to the center and the patient will be refunded, the State’s Coordinator and Assistant Commissioner Amrit Nikhade, told ‘My Mahanagar’.

Therefore to compensate the victim patients, the Home department has formed a committee to give justice to the patients in this matter. The Maharashtra’s FDA took an initiative and filed a complaint to in Police for getting justice for the victims. The investigation has not been completed yet.
